GARY'S TALES

The room where Gary Thomson writes instead of shooting. Authored texts — short, cinematic, cruel — filmed with me as the body of the story. The moving image below is not an illustration of the tale: it is the same nightmare, recorded.

THE PHOENIX

A tale of beauty, hunger and the last transformation

Yuliya had learned early that beauty was not a gift. It was a hunger.

chapter I

THE CURTAIN

Photographers called her luminous. Designers called her unforgettable. Strangers called her perfect. But Yuliya knew what perfection really meant: standing still while someone else decided what parts of you were allowed to survive.

She was a model, and her body had become a canvas for other people's nightmares.

The first time she saw the phoenix, it was behind a curtain at a fashion show.

It stood where no person could possibly stand — too tall, too graceful, its silhouette flickering as though it were made from smoke and flame. Its eyes were black, but deep inside them burned tiny golden suns.

“Beautiful.”

Yuliya turned. Nobody was there.

The next morning, she found a red feather on her pillow. She should have thrown it away. Instead, she kept it.

chapter II

EVERY REINVENTION

After that, her career changed. Every time Yuliya reinvented herself, the phoenix appeared.

When she cut her hair, it watched from the mirror. When she dyed it silver, its reflection smiled behind her. When she changed her body, her clothes, her face, her entire aesthetic, the phoenix grew more beautiful.

And so did Yuliya. That was the terrible part.

The more she suffered for her art, the more magnificent she became.

Pain became photographs. Photographs became fame. Fame became another kind of cage.

Soon, the photographers began asking for things that frightened her.

“More vulnerable.” “More broken.” “Give us something real.”

Yuliya gave them everything. She stood beneath freezing lights until her skin went numb. She held poses until her muscles trembled. She let makeup transform her into corpses, angels, monsters, saints.

Each morning, another photograph appeared in a magazine. Each night, another red feather appeared somewhere in her apartment.

chapter III

THE PHOTOGRAPH SHE NEVER POSED FOR

Then one evening she discovered a photograph she had never posed for.

It showed her standing in a burning room. Her face was turned toward the camera. Behind her stood the phoenix. On the back, someone had written:

EVERY MASTERPIECE REQUIRES A SACRIFICE.

Yuliya stopped working. For three days, she locked herself inside her apartment.

On the fourth night, the phoenix came through the mirror. It stepped into the room as silently as a dancer. Its feathers were flames, but they gave off no heat.

“You made me.”

Yuliya backed away. “I don't know you.” — “You do.” The phoenix smiled. “You wanted to become someone nobody could forget.”

Yuliya looked at the photographs covering her walls. Thousands of versions of herself stared back. Blonde Yuliya. Dark-haired Yuliya. Pale Yuliya. Beautiful Yuliya. Terrified Yuliya. A woman who looked like Yuliya but no longer felt like her.

“What do you want?” she whispered. The phoenix came closer.

“One final transformation.”
chapter IV

THE MIRROR

Yuliya understood. The phoenix had never been following her. It had been feeding on her. Every reinvention had given it another piece of her identity. Every photograph had preserved the moment she disappeared.

And now it wanted the last piece. Her face. Her name. Her self.

“No,” Yuliya said. The phoenix tilted its head. “You always said yes.”

The room began to burn. Photographs curled on the walls. Flames crawled across the ceiling. In every frame, Yuliya's captured faces began to move. They whispered. They begged. They screamed her name.

Yuliya ran to the mirror. For the first time, she saw herself without makeup, without styling, without a pose. Just Yuliya. Tired. Afraid. Alive.

She touched the glass. The phoenix shrieked. The mirror shattered. And Yuliya stepped through.

When the fire department arrived, the apartment was empty. No body was found. No phoenix. Only thousands of photographs, all burned except one. It showed an empty room. And in the center stood a single red feather.

chapter V

THE SECOND FIGURE

Years later, a new model appeared on the covers of every major fashion magazine. She was mysterious. Elegant. Impossible to photograph twice the same way.

Every season she reinvented herself. Her name was always different. Her face was never quite the same.

But photographers noticed something strange. Whenever they developed her pictures, there was always a second figure somewhere in the background. A tall woman with dark eyes. A woman made of smoke and gold.

And if the photograph was enlarged enough, you could see the truth. The model was not smiling at the camera. She was looking over her shoulder. At Yuliya. And Yuliya was smiling.

Because the phoenix had finally learned the oldest lesson of all:

You cannot kill something that knows how to become someone else.
coda

And somewhere, beneath the lights of another runway, another young woman was about to hear a whisper behind the curtain.

“Beautiful.”

Then the sound of wings. And the smell of smoke.
