about the artist

MASTER OF METAMORPHOSIS

Robert Matheson is an American artist whose career spans decades of creative exploration: from graphic design and programming at the dawn of the internet to deep, tangible oil painting. His path is one of “Metamorphosis” — a constant transition from one state to another.

A master of plein air painting and a subtle colorist, he brought to our collaborative project something often lacking in digital art: physical depth and historical context.

prologue

THE HEXA-PROTOCOL

Symbiosis of the error — where the first imperfections of the machine became a sacred anatomy.

The Hexa-Protocol: Symbiosis of the Error — a pioneering exploration into the dawn of AI synthesis. The human form is deliberately merged with the ‘infant’ logic of artificial intelligence. Extra fingers and distorted limbs — once considered technical errors — are here reclaimed as a new, sacred anatomy.

Standing before a backdrop of fragmented biological signals, the figure becomes the bridge between carbon-based life and silicon-based dreams: a raw, historical record of the moment humanity and machine first began to mirror each other’s imperfections.

Finding divinity in the digital glitch.

SEVEN SERIES

From the Flow of Ether to the Silicon Eden — the brushstroke keeps its weight inside the algorithm.

IThe Flow of EtherSERIES I // AI-ASSISTED SYNTHESISNeural Impressionism

Robert Matheson × Yulia — AI-assisted synthesis via Midjourney.

In this series we explore the dissolution of form. By blending Yulia’s photographic self-portraits with Robert’s physical oil paintings, the artists created a ‘Neural Ether.’ The human silhouette is no longer a fixed object but a fluid presence, weaving through layers of atmospheric light and painterly texture — a sanctuary where the digital and the analog breathe as one.

IICyber ShamanismSERIES II // THE DIGITAL SOULTechno-rituals

An exploration of the digital soul. In an era dominated by algorithms we return to the ancient roots of human connection: techno-rituals where the machine becomes a portal and code becomes a sacred chant. The shaman no longer walks through forests but through data streams, retrieving lost fragments of the human spirit from the neon void.

The Resonance of Redemption

The gesture of the hands is the anchor. Even when the body dissolves into pixels and light, the human intent remains solid. This piece is about saving one another in a world that tries to deconstruct us.

At the centre of the composition is an act of supreme trust: one figure pulls another out of the ‘glitch void.’ Red symbolizes blood, life and earthly energy, while black and static represent the infinity of digital space.

The Signal Ascension

The human form acts as a lightning rod for the divine code. The figure stands tall, arms raised toward the neon heavens in a gesture of absolute surrender and power. The deep, lunging stance anchors the soul to the earth while the body dissolves into upward-streaming currents of data and light — the Cyber-Shaman in the moment of invocation, turning the chaotic noise of the digital age into a structured, sacred frequency.

The Symbio-Core

Here we witness the absolute dissolution of the individual. The two figures — one in red, one in black — no longer exist as separate entities. Their movements are so tightly interwoven that Robert’s digital alchemy melts them into a single, vibrating pillar of light. Red is the pulse of the earth, black the depth of the void: a Neural Symbiosis where one person’s energy feeds the other.

IIIThe Neural Void & MultiplicityDIPTYCH III // DEPERSONALIZATIONDiptych

Two panels on the silencing of the ego and its explosion into infinite digital selves.

Part I — The Hollow Protocol

The first panel introduces the ‘Faceless Oracle.’ A striking red figure stands with one hand on its hip — a gesture of grounded authority — while the other presses into the streaming currents of the digital void. The hollow space where the face should be is not a lack but a portal: the complete silencing of the ego, turning the human form into a pure vessel through which the raw energy of the machine can flow. This is the stage of Shamanic Depersonalization.

Part II — The Spectrum Collision

The second panel erupts into a complex double exposure of form and colour. The Void of the first panel is filled with a chaotic yet harmonious multiplicity of being. Red, white and blue traces collide on pitch black, representing the fragmentation of the soul into infinite digital possibilities — the moment the individual expands into a thousand versions of itself, existing simultaneously across the data-field.

IVPop-Sphere & Cultural SedimentDIPTYCH IV // LAYERED IDENTITYDiptych · pop-surrealism collage

An exploration of the layered nature of human identity in the post-internet era. It contrasts the dreamlike, subconscious expansion of the soul with the heavy, structured weight of cultural history — a portrait of a mind simultaneously floating in the future and anchored in the past.

Part I — The Rainbow Invoker

A lone figure in a deep-black diving suit — the ‘Dream Catcher’ — is suspended in mid-air. Its hand reaches out to initiate contact with another figure lying beneath: the ‘Core Soul,’ a burst of primal energy in a vibrant segmented rainbow costume and a serene white balaclava. Vintage hot air balloons and fragments of colour float around them: the debris of shared pop culture, backdrop to this intimate metaphysical connection.

Part II — The Sediment of Culture

A depiction of Cultural Confinement. The heavy bust of J.S. Bach and a portrait of a young, red-faced Mozart stack vertically like layers of geological sediment. Below them two dancers — one in black, one in red — find their rhythm not in empty space but amidst this heavy cultural history. The ‘W’ symbol and the tapestry of roses anchor the composition: raw kinetic energy against the inescapable structure of artistic heritage.

VAlgorithmic PrefractureTRIPTYCH V // IDENTITY AS PRISMTriptych · neural crystal surrealism

This triptych explores the fragmentation of identity in the age of algorithms. Using raw portrait photography, the neural network grows data-crystals around and through the human form. The resulting portraits are not passive captures but active computations of a face — fragmented, refracted and multiplied within impossible geometries. It is the moment identity becomes a prism.

Part I — The Primal Split

The ‘Refracted Oracle.’ Yulia’s portrait is encapsulated within a singular, massive raw crystal structure. Her face is whole, yet its identity is already destabilized, appearing simultaneously as a physical entity and a digital computation within the facets. Purple and gold tones suggest a sacred, alchemical transformation of the human into the informational.

Part II — The Matrix Recursion

‘Recursive Geometry.’ The human form is not inside the crystal but behind it, viewed through two massive, precisely cut pyramidal structures. The crystals act as double lenses, creating an algorithm-driven reflection: a nested multiplicity of faces stacked vertically and horizontally, an endless stream of mirrors.

Part III — The Fragmented Ascension

‘Refractive Unity.’ A complex arrangement of vertical crystal spires — some sharp, some blurred — captures the face and hands in a state of final computational multiplication. The faint algorithmic rainbow glitch in the foremost crystal signifies the moment of digital transcendence: identity fully integrated into the silicon structure, existing across infinite computational paths at once.

VIThe Monochrome AscensionDIPTYCH VI // HARDWARE & SPIRITDiptych · noir cyber-mysticism

This diptych captures the metamorphosis of a human pilot into a divine digital entity. The goggles and tight suits are the ‘hardware’ of the physical world, while the double exposure and the appearance of wings signify the ‘software’ of the spirit taking flight — a study of black, white and the infinite grey of the subconscious.

Part I — The Pilot of the Void

The Preparation. The figure is grounded, physical and ready; the goggles suggest a need to see beyond the visible spectrum. The shadow behind her is her own soul, already beginning to shift and vibrate, preparing for detachment from reality.

Dressed in a sleek dark suit and aviator goggles, the Techno-Shaman stands as a bridge between eras. Double exposure creates a ghostly silhouette; one hand rests on her hip in classic defiance while the other reaches into the light, testing the boundaries of the physical plane.

Part II — The Data-Winged Seraph

The Transformation. The Pilot has crossed over. A magnificent, intricately textured wing erupts from her back, shimmering with metallic and ethereal light. Grain and lens flares evoke an old cinematic masterpiece. She is no longer just human: a Seraph of the machine age, caught between falling and flying through the digital ether.

VIIThe Silicon EdenSERIES VII // NATURE × SILICONSeries · the data fall

Conceptual origin: Yuliya Yurchevskaya · neural transformation: Robert Matheson.

The series explores the ‘Data Fall’ — the moment when biological matter and digital consciousness merge. The apple, originally a simple object of Yulia’s photography, becomes the womb for two figures. Their bodies are rendered with a painterly, classical texture that echoes the Renaissance, yet their structure is purely algorithmic. It is a story of a new beginning where nature and silicon are no longer at odds.

THE SYNERGY

Robert Matheson brought oil, plein air and decades of analog craft into a field made of code. What grew between us is neither painting nor render: it is a synergy where the brushstroke keeps its weight inside the algorithm — the last, and the deepest, of our collaborations.
